Linux Plumbers Conference: Day 1 Wrap Up

Sep 18, 2008

The first day of the Linux Plumbers Conference in Portland, Oregon demonstrated that the primary goal of its organizers is being met: developers who are actively working on individual projects are gathering together to address specific cross-project problems.

In several of today's sessions, the original presentation morphed into an active discussion among developers about various programming problems and their possible solutions.

Today's microconferences covered a range of topics – from audio device drivers to debugging methods and tools – and culminated in a Git tutorial given by Linus Torvalds. Torvalds was surprised that half the people in the room were already using Git. He then discussed the design of the tool, its simplicity and stability, then tailored his prepared presentation to balance simple use for new users with advanced topics for those with more experience.

In addition to the microconferences, the LPC schedule includes evening social events designed to get attendees away from conference rooms and introduce them to Portland at large.
