Ultraportable PC: Everex Competing with Eee PC
US vendor Everex is looking to release an ultraportable notebook at a budget price to compete with the Asus EEE.
The ultraportable "Cloudbook" will also have a 7 inch display and be of a similar size. The "Cloudbook" will use "gOS", a Ubuntu 7.10 based operating system designed for Google applications. Instead of using the Gnome or KDE desktop gOS relies on Enlightment, a desktop that is frugal in its memory requirements. Computers with gOS are already available from Walmart.
In comparison to the Eee PC the "Cloudbook" has a Via C7 ULV CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz. The mass memory will be a normal laptop hard disk with a capacity of 30GB. Competitor Asus is banking on shock-proof Flash technology. The ports for attaching an external display are also different with Asus going for VGA, and the Cloudbook providing a DVI out port. One thing both machines have in common is a webcam integrated into the border of the display.
The "Cloudbook" may be introduced at the January 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The price is said to be around US$300 to 400. A developer version with a touchscreen and enhanced diagnostics is also planned.
