CeBIT Open Source 2011 - Project Presentation Plone
ByDuring CeBIT 2011 open source projects such as Plone, enterprise content management system for professional use, will have the opportunity to showcase what is currently in active development.
Short and sweet: How would you describe your project in one or two sentences?
Plone is a powerful open source enterprise content management system for professional use in organizations and enterprises. With its large range of features, secure policy management, supporting workflow, accessibilty and powerful tools for system administration Plone is different from other CMS.
When did the project begin?
The first Plone release was in 2001.
How many active members does the project have?
Plone is among the top 2% of all open source projects worldwide, with 340 core developers and more than 300 solution providers in 57 countries.
Why was the project created?
Plone is the most sucessful project ever which was developed for the Zope application server. Zope and Plone are part of the innovative and vibrant Python community.
Why should a CeBIT visitor come to your booth?
Plone is not only a very powerful enterprise content management system. It is a very secure one, used by huge organisations with special security requirements like NASA, CIA and FBI.
Visitors interested in enterprise level content management, document management or knowledge management may not miss the opportunity to meet core developers and community members of Plone during the CeBIT.
Who do you make your software for?
Plone is designed to meet the requirements of small, medium and big enterprises and organisations like universities and research institutes. Plone is fully internationalized and can be used as an internet or intranet cms.
Where do you see your biggest current challenges?
There are no real problems. The development process of Plone is very well organized. The code is owned by the Plone foundation so we don't have to fear any buyout problems. The roadmap for the next two years is defined. And Plone is getting more popular.
If you could hire a full-time project developer now, what problem should he or she be ready to solve?
Plone is a modular system so there is no tough nut to crack. Improvement is achieved by many small incremental changes. To organize this process is a major task done by several members of the community. If the Plone Foundation had more money, it could pay the framework team, which decides about new features, or an employed release manager.
Under which license is the software currently offered?
Plone is distributed under the GNU Public License.
