Bada: New Mobile Platform from Samsung

Dec 10, 2009

Following a rather vague announcement in November, Samsung has now released details about their open smartphone development platform bada to the Web.

The bada platform is the new smartphone operating system from Samsung. The word "bada" is Korean for "ocean." Most media interpretation of Samsung's first announcement in November was that it was a Linux system, even though Samsung was not explicit regarding the kernel at the time.

The information currently available is that the bada kernel is a Linux system, but doesn't need to be. Depending on the hardware, it can be Linux or some other not specifically named real-time OS. The kernel provides a series of GNU tools and uses Eclipse.

Those interested in bada development can find a good overview in a PDF document.
