Ubuntu Developer Week

Feb 14, 2008

The first Ubuntu Developer Week starts next Monday.

For a whole week, anybody interested in doing so can shoulder surf Ubuntu experts at work and bombard them with questions. Various IRC channels will serve as classrooms; some of them are already online.

Ubuntu development is not a simple question and answer game: on the contrary, over the years, a complex communications structure has established itself. The talks attempt to explain how it works, and which processes run in what Ubuntu refers to as MOTUs (Masters of the Universe). Packaging for Ubuntu also plays an important role. To be able to maintain the enormous collection of packages, Ubuntu developers rely on many other contributors.

On top of this, the Developer Week’s organizers will be looking to demonstrate bug hunting and fixing techniques. To avoid the event becoming too chaotic, the organizers have also laid down a number of rules to keep communications running efficiently.
