Software-defined networking puts an end to patchwork administration
Successful Start
SDN has really started to build steam since 2011. On the controller side, in particular, network architects have many choices. The open source community can point to projects such as Floodlight [5] Beacon [6] or Open Daylight [7], and several commercial vendors also offer products, including VMware, Cisco, HP, IBM, and Brocade.
The network devices side still leaves plenty of scope for improvement. Unfortunately, the number of the SDN-capable switches is still quite small. The founding members of the Open Networking Foundation are working hard to migrate their own networks to the paradigm, but the industry still has a general lack of comprehensive hands-on experience with the new approach.
