Linux distributor Novell is reorganizing: from now on, one developer team will dedicate itself entirely to openSUSE.

Up to Novell's takeover of the Suse Linux AG, KDE was without doubt the preferred default for the German distribution. Now openSUSE users are increasingly demanding the return of KDE as default desktop.

Novell has announced its image building SUSE Studio to be ready for production and the Linux distributor has simultaneously started a partner-program aimed at software manufacturers who want to use SUSE Linux Enterprise as a base for software appliances.

Communtu wants to give new installers and Windows converts an easier time with Ubuntu. They will present a webpage with a list of suggested programs to install as a metapackage, including multimedia and proprietary software, and then install it.

Novell seems to have revived its love for SUSE Linux. It now provides an interactive program to craft your own version of the Geeko mascot.

The udev subsystem allows the Linux kernel, together with a userland program, to manage device nodes dynamically, adding and removing them at will. It has now been revealed that the communication channel between the kernel and program fails to authenticate, so that users can assume root privileges.

The openSUSE project and the Linux Foundation will be making the openSUSE Build Service available through the Linux Developer Network (LDN). Among other things, the Build Service will take advantage of the LDN's AppChecker.

A selection of categorized 1-click installers is now being displayed on the openSUSE community website.

The wait is over for iFolder updates. Wider platform support and a number of significant additions should have the FOSS community moving forward again with the iFolder project.
