  The past few years have seen some encouraging signs from Microsoft. For instance, they no longer propagate transparent and self-serving falsehoods about Linux at every opportunity. However, recent events indicate that maybe the new Microsoft might be all too much like the old Microsoft.

  Sometimes I'm amazed at how this column just slips out into the world and no one says much about it. One thing I do hear occasionally is that "It's refreshing that you aren't just summarizing the contents of the issue, which is what most welcome columns do." I do plead guilty to having a great many opinions, some of which I manage to share from time to time in this space. However, in this case, my opinion does point to an article you'll see in this month's issue.

  A couple of insightful commentaries in this issue are already covering the news that Microsoft is joining the Linux Foundation (see Simon Phipps and Andrew Gregory inside). Since this column is the last to get written – usually right before we go to print, I'm really supposed to talk about things that aren't already covered in the issue, but this really is big news.

  This article went to press one week before Richard Stallman abruptly resigned as head of the Free Software Foundation. Yikes! All is flux in the FOSS world. Still, the trend toward détente between Microsoft and the Free Software community is bound to continue, and these thoughts on Stallman’s recent visit to Redmond offer a glimpse into how real change happens – one small step at a time.

  The impending end of life for Windows 10 has launched a new round of calls for Windows users to adopt Linux. KDE recently made a pitch. The End of 10 initiative is supported by a number of open source organizations who make the case that this is a good time for Windows users to switch.
