One of the principles of the open source movement is "don't reinvent the wheel." If an application does what you need to do, use it. Thousands of free applications are available within the open source community, and if you look around, you can probably find a tool that does exactly what you want. But what if you can't find a tool that does what you want? Another principle of the open source movement is "do it yourself." This month's tutorial on converting a homegrown SQL database to the more versatile JSON document format will give you some practical experience with data formats, as well as Python APIs.
