The recent online database breaches (e.g., LastPass and NortonLifeLock) have underscored the fact that there's no perfect solution when it comes to storing passwords. In an ideal world, everyone would use a strong, unique password for every online account, in addition to secure logins with 2FA.
In reality, convenience tends to triumph over security, in part due to the ease with which browsers and dedicated online managers can recall login credentials. KeePassXC is a slightly different beast in that it offers no integrated online syncing capabilities.
In the words of the main project website, the program saves credentials, URLS, attachments, and other sensitive data in an offline, encrypted file. The program uses the KeePass 2.x (.kdbx
) password database format natively, securing said databases using either 256-bit AES or Twofish encryption.
