Kdenlive
Since 2002, the invaluable Kdenlive editor has been an excellent alternative for those unwilling or unable to pay hundreds of dollars for Adobe products. As a member of the KDE Projects suite, it now has a dedicated team of developers. In 2022 KDE even arranged a fundraising drive for the program to introduce a number of key video-editing features. The latest version (24.05.0) was released at the end of May.
One of the most exciting upgrades revolves around group effects. The previous iteration of Kdenlive allowed users to add the same effect to a group of clips. You can now also control all effect parameters within a group. Kdenlive is now more social-media friendly, because the video editor supports rendering videos in multiple aspect ratios including horizontal, vertical, and square via the dedicated render widget.
The subtitles feature has received yet another overhaul: The editor can now automatically translate subtitles using SeamlessM4T. No Internet connection is required for translation, though naturally you'll need to download the relevant models from Settings in the first instance. Subtitles also now support bold and italic attributes. Whisper also now has an option to assign a maximum character count per subtitle. It also provides better feedback by displaying output in the speech-recognition dialog.
