A GUI application written in Go helps Mike Schilli select videos from his phone using animated thumbnails and get rid of the clutter.
I've been writing this column for almost 30 years now, and when you cobble together a new application every month, you end up with quite a few over such a long period of time. But you can't expect programs you wrote back in the day to run without maintenance until the end of time, especially when the libraries and APIs used are evolving at the speed of the Internet.
Having said this, a few tools I've written for some issues have turned out to be real winners for my daily needs. For example, I still use the iNuke photo sorter from my January 2022 column [1] to quickly separate the wheat from the chaff among my photos on my mobile phone. Unfortunately, this app only works with JPEG photos, although I often record videos on my smartphone. And there you have it: Here comes a new tool to get rid of the junk right away, before it clogs up my hard disks or cloud storage for all eternity.

Of course, a video file isn't just a simple sequence of individual photo frames, which raises the question of how a video viewer could display the clips as thumbnails in a way that lets users make an informed choice on which files to keep.
