Final Maintenance for Hardy Heron: Ubuntu Update 8.04 LTS
Canonical has released the fourth and last maintenance update for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron).
Further upgrades and security fixes will in future only take place via the package manager. This will be valid for desktop systems until 2011, and servers up to April 2013. The next Ubuntu version with Long Term Support (LTS) with the codename Lucid Lynx is expected in April 2010.
The update 8.04 fixes bugs in the use of SMB/CIFS shares in the Gnome Virtual File System and Nautilus. Desktop systems will also be the subject of changes in the Instant Messenger Pidgin. Here support for version 16 of Yahoo's messenger protocol has been added, making it again possible to log into Yahoo.
For servers, improvements have been made on the free radius daemon, that will now carry out a problem-free configuration reload. Bug fixes have also taken place in Vblade, the software implemented ATA-over-Ethernet-Target. A complete list of changes can be found at the Ubuntu Wiki.
Installation images of Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS can be downloaded here.
