Free Project Management Tool OpenProj Off to a Flying Start

Aug 24, 2007

Projity, the company behind the free OpenProj software reports more than 25,000 downloads of the project software within the first week after the release.

OpenProj is positioned as a free, Open Source alternative to Microsoft Project and runs on Linux, Unix, Mac, or Windows. The French-US enterprise, Projity, presented the first beta version of OpenProj at Linuxworld in San Francisco, early in August. Projity now points to the success of the software which is available via the Sourceforge download portal, where it is listed among the "Top Ten" most active projects. SourceForge hosts over 160,000 projects all told. French Linux distributor Mandriva has already announced that it will be including the project management software with its next distribution.

Besides the free OpenProj software, Projity offers a Project-On-Demand software subscription. Both solutions use the same software base, but the commercial version has additional server functionality, such as reporting, as well as support by the vendor. According to the vendor, the free version is designed as a free replacement for Microsoft Project Desktop, while the commercial variant is designed for large-scale projects in enterprises.
