OLPC Announces XO-3 Tablet
Tablet to cost US$ 75, aimed toward US children.
The One Laptop Per Child Foundation announced plans for a US$ 78 tablet to be revealed at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Marvell Technologies will partner with OLPC to create the necessary hardware.
The tablet, called the XO-3, will come equipped with an ARM processor and run Android during its prototype phase before becoming an open Linux platform. The XO-3 will also have a screen at least nine inches diagonal and while the initial model will be glass, a dual display for both indoor and outdoor viewing built by Pixel Qi is planned for the 2012 version.
OLPC is aiming the device at children in developed countries. Nicholas Negroponte, the chairman of One Laptop Per Child has high hopes for the device, hoping that it will merge the functionality of an iPad, Kindle and an iPad, all while staying keeping costs low. Negroponte was confident at hitting the price point, but OLPC has had a spotty pricing record in the past.
A reference design for the XO-3 featured Marvell's Armada 610 processor, though no ARM chip has been confirmed.
