Open PC: Taylor-Made Linux Hardware
KDE developer Frank Karlitschek announced the launch of the Open PC Project at the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit. Goal of the project is to assemble a PC fit for optimal use of Linux and free software.
The project's website shows little apart from an ambitious time plan: the PC should be ready for delivery in Fall 2009. A vote to establish the choice of hard and software is currently being held. A second vote will be held in August.
At the summit, Karlitschek asked for support and proposed a PC in the 300 to 400 Dollar price range. The machine will be built by one vendor and part of the profits will flow back into open source projects. According to his presentation, the project will receive support and online-services from the community and there's also a suggestion of an app.-store. Karlitschek is looking for more participation in his vote.
