Gnome Ubuntu Remix 12.10 and Linux Mint 13 KDE
Canonical's persistent efforts to perfect the new age Unity desktop for Ubuntu Linux has gotten them in trouble with lots of long-term users, but the Ubuntu project is always quick to point out to the critics: "This is Linux. If you don't like the desktop, change it!"
As it turns out, the Ubuntu project actually builds its own Gnome-based Ubuntu, and we are bringing it to our readers with this month's DVD. Gnome Ubuntu Remix 12.10 is a full version of the latest 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal" Ubuntu release that boots to a default Gnome 3.6 desktop.
Ubuntu 12.10 includes a number of new features, such as the WebApps social networking tool, which provides desktop integration of online services such as Twitter, Facebook, and Gmail. The Gnome 3.6 desktop comes with dozens of new and improved applications for virtualization, remote management, and accessibility, as well as a rejuvenated file manager and improved developer tools.
On the other side of this month's DVD, you'll find the Linux Mint 13 KDE edition. Mint is a popular Ubuntu-based Linux with an emphasis on ease of use. KDE 4.8 comes with the ever-popular Plasma desktop, as well as improvements in interoperability and power management.
