VMware monitoring with OpenNMS
X-rayed
Dynamic resource allocation and migration of virtual machines between hosts mean that VMware environments pose new monitoring challenges. A new version of the free OpenNMS network management tool now includes an option for monitoring VMware-based infrastructures.
OpenNMS is an enterprise-grade, open source network management system. According to the project website, OpenNMS provides:
- automated and directed discovery and provisioning,
- event and notification management,
- service assurance, and
- performance measurement.
The OpenNMS platform helps IT departments monitor and manage network services with maximum convenience and minimum overhead. OpenNMS is well understood and quite popular, but the rise of virtualization has complicated the task of network management (see "Monitoring in Virtual Environments"). Computer scientists at Fulda University (Germany) have created an extension to OpenNMS that supports management of VMware virtual machines. This extended version lets users integrate management of virtual and hardware resources into a single interface.
