Recovering files with Magic Rescue
Alternatives
Magic Rescue should be thought of as one of many related tools. Many times, you will probably want to use it along with several other recovery tools. At the bottom of the Magic Rescue man page is a suggestion to use it with The Sleuth Kit [5], if the corruption is minor, or with foremost
[6], which has more recipes. For badly corrupted files, a rescue disk that includes GNU Parted [7], with or without a front end, might be more suitable.
All these tools are worth familiarizing yourself with. Of course, unless someone takes over Magic Rescue's development, a time is coming when it will no longer be functional. However, while it works, I recommend starting with Magic Rescue and resorting to the other tools only when it has failed. Magic Rescue has some difficult aspects, but for basic recovery, it is still the quickest to learn of these alternatives – and, in a crisis, quickness can be an important virtue.
