Dear Reader,

Microsoft just announced that its built-in Linux kernel is available for testing. The Linux kernel that will be integrated with Windows 10 is tuned to work with the Windows Subsystem for Linux compatibility suite. Predictably, a new round of alarms went up around the Linux community – just as they did when Microsoft announced that they would soon be shipping this new Linux back in May. Microsoft distributing Linux? Is this a trick or some kind of nefarious subterfuge? Weren't they the ones who said Linux is a cancer?

The company now says they are quite friendly and happy with Linux, but their past behavior was so outrageous that many who remember the bad old days are still a bit spooked by their change of heart.

The past few years have seen some encouraging signs from Microsoft. For instance, they no longer propagate transparent and self-serving falsehoods about Linux at every opportunity. However, recent events indicate that maybe the new Microsoft might be all too much like the old Microsoft.

Sometimes I'm amazed at how this column just slips out into the world and no one says much about it. One thing I do hear occasionally is that "It's refreshing that you aren't just summarizing the contents of the issue, which is what most welcome columns do." I do plead guilty to having a great many opinions, some of which I manage to share from time to time in this space. However, in this case, my opinion does point to an article you'll see in this month's issue.

Since this column is the last to get written – usually right before we go to print, I'm really supposed to talk about things that aren't already covered in the issue, but this really is big news.

This article went to press one week before Richard Stallman abruptly resigned as head of the Free Software Foundation. Yikes! All is flux in the FOSS world. Still, the trend toward détente between Microsoft and the Free Software community is bound to continue, and these thoughts on Stallman’s recent visit to Redmond offer a glimpse into how real change happens – one small step at a time.
