Privacy isn't just a thing you add at the end. In the best case, privacy starts with a set of guiding principles – a philosophy you build into the infrastructure from the ground up. The big social networking companies put all your data on a server, and that server is the site for all the data mining and other monkey business that comes with commercial social media.
