Fedora Linux is a community-driven, upstream version of RHEL, CentOS Stream, and related distributions. Traditionally, Fedora has introduced numerous applications and features, and Fedora Workstation 40 is no exception. Standout features include bootable containers intended for atomic flavors of Fedora such as SilverBlue, and PyTorch and ROCm 6, two artificial intelligence (AI) engines widely used for image and speech recognition. Other major features include an OpenCL compiler with clearer build-fail error messages, and the ability to assign random MAC addresses to WiFi connections for greater privacy.
Updates to standard applications such as the GNU toolchain, the DNF package manager, and Podman, the popular container management tool, round out Fedora 40. It uses Gnome 46 and Plasma 6, both running on Wayland. The result is a distribution with something for newcomers and expert users alike, as well all levels of users in between.
