Deviceimage: Linux-based Backup Tool
Deviceimage by Firma Waxar backs up hard disks and partitions on backup media or across a network. The software launches from a bootable Linux CD.
This gives users the ability to back up machines with a damage operating system on their boot disks. The Deviceimage CD is suitable for x86 computers and Apple computers with Intel CPUs.
The disk imaging software itself is a development by Waxar and was written in C++. It uses a spartan text mode interface which was created using the Newt toolkit.
The proprietary Deviceimage software creates packed images of files, partitions or complete hard disks and supports a large number of operating systems according to the vendor, such as Reiser-FS, NTFS, UFS, Ext2 and 3. The backup can be created on various media including ATA and SCSI hard disks, USB and Firewire storage devices and PC cards. The program can also transfer files to the network using FTP, NFS and CIFS (Windows shares).
Deviceimage costs around 40 euros including VAT as the Basic version which only supports backups on local devices. The Advanced and Professional versions with network support, backup automation and encryption are currently being reworked by the vendor, and will be released shortly.
