Linux Now Runs Most Windows Games
The latest data shows that nearly 90 percent of Windows games can be played on Linux.
If you're a gamer and you're looking to finally get away from Windows, that time is now. Thanks to Steam and Wine, nearly 90 percent of Windows games can now be played on Linux. That's 9 in 10 games, which is a huge milestone for the open source operating system, as well as yet another barrier to entry removed.
Before you get too excited, you should be warned that not every game runs to perfection on Linux with Wine or Steam. You can check out the Wine application database to see how well the game you want to run works. You also need to consider your hardware, but that's no different than macOS or Windows.
This announcement was first made public by Tom's Hardware, which pointed to an X account for Boiling Steam, which, oddly enough, has no posts. If you jump to the official Boiling Steam site, you'll find a link to a post titled Windows Games’ Compatibility on Linux Is at an All-Time High.
In that post, Boiling Steam refers to a graph that lists the progress over time with Steam Play/Proton and states, “The graph shows a steady increase in the percentage of games that run out of the box on Linux, indicating continuous efforts by WINE and Proton developers to support compatibility of new and older titles.”
It's a good time to be a Linux fan.
