What Open Source Pros Look for in a Job Role

Apr 14, 2025

Learn what professionals in technical and non-technical roles say is most important when seeking a new position.

Open Source JobHub (OSJH) and Linux Professional Institute (LPI) have jointly released the results of the 2025 Open Source Professionals Job Survey in a free report.

This year’s survey, which asked open source pros to rank several factors in terms of importance when seeking a new job role, found that 97% of respondents rate professional fulfillment as essential, very important, or somewhat important. Factors such as work-life balance, remote work, open source policy guidelines, and training and certification opportunities were also highly valued.

The 2025 Open Source Professionals Job Survey Report summarizes these preferences and compares the results in terms of respondents’ stated job roles and level of experience, providing insight for both job seekers and hiring managers.

“This report offers a unique view into what open source professionals are looking for in their job roles,” says Brian Osborn, Founder of OSJH, and CEO and Publisher at Linux New Media. “Understanding the perspective of these admins, developers, and non-tech pros is key to finding and retaining open source talent.”
