May 24, 2010

The Windows compatibility layer adds new features, addresses bugs.

Wine, the compatibility layer that allows Unix-based systems to run Windows programs by re-implementing DLLs and substituting the Windows NT kernel, entered a code freeze today as Wine 1.2 enters its first release candidate.

Among the enhancements included in the release candidate are new toolbar icons, a more complete shader assembler, video rendering improvements and font antialiasing configuration through fontconfig.

Binary packages for Wine 1.2-rc1 are available at winehq.org/site/download. The source code is available here and here. Full documentation can be found at winehq.org/site/documentation.
