Tutorial – Metadata in digiKam
Metadata provides information about many aspects of a photo. DigiKam lets serious photographers edit photo data conveniently with its graphical user interface – and add geodata.
Metadata is information that's stored in media files such as photos and includes details about the image such as the date and time it was taken, the camera settings, GPS coordinates, author, license, or image subject. Photographers rely on metadata for sorting, searching for, and analyzing photos.
There are several free programs for editing metadata. The ExifTool [1] command-line program is powerful but not entirely user-friendly software. The KDE digiKam application makes it far easier to edit metadata in a graphical user interface. One of digiKam's highlights is the georeferencing function. It lets you convert GPS coordinates into place and country names, making it easier for users to find their way around.
In this article, I will describe how to add and edit metadata to your images with digiKam. The focus here is on geotags (i.e., the geographical data that tells viewers where a photo was taken).
