Built on Ubuntu, elementary OS describes itself as "thoughtful, capable, and ethical" and develops the Pantheon desktop environment. From its earliest releases, Zorin OS has had the reputation of being at the forefront of improving the user experience.
In previous releases, elementary OS opted for Flatpak packages in Portals – standardized interfaces that require the user's consent for such tasks as taking screenshots or color picking. In this release, users have the choice of a Classic Session with only Wayland's security features or a Secure Session with new Portals and a dock with new multitasking and window management features. Applications that have yet to support Portals will run in Classic Session.
Another change is that operating system updates that are installed offline and apps that are installed with the system running are now listed separately. Users can also look forward to improved keyboard navigation and an enhanced screen reader. Cosmetic improvements include light and dark modes and an improved font display.
