RSS is not well known outside of tech savvy circles, yet it remains one of the best methods to consume recurrent publications, such as blogs.
Due in great part to the way web services are monetized, blog operators try very hard to generate recurrent visitors – to ensure each given visitor returns to the blog every now and then. Anyone who browses the web regularly has surely noticed that every blog, shop, or site insists you subscribe to their newsletter. They often do it with intrusive means, such as annoying pop-ups. The idea is that, once you have given your email to them, they will notify you every time their site gets updated.
While this approach works up to a point, it has a number of drawbacks. First of all, it requires you to hand your email address to the subscription operator. In addition, if the subscription is quite active, it might flood your inbox. Finally, managing your subscription requires you to interact with the subscription operator, which isn't always very convenient.
It didn't used to be this way. Not so long ago, the main technology for receiving blog updates was Really Simple Syndication (RSS). The popular conspiracy theory goes that it lost favor because it empowered users rather than blogmasters. Nevertheless, RSS remains well supported by blogging platforms, even if blogmasters often attempt to conceal the fact.
