Google and O'Reilly will present open source awards at OSCON again this year. Allison Randall's recent blog post says that you have until May 15th to send in your nominations to osawards AT oreilly DOT com. According to Allison, you can't nominate Google or O'Reilly employees and "Nominations should include the name of the recipient, any associated project/org, suggested title for the award ("Best Hacker", "Best Community Builder", etc.), and a description of why you are nominating the individual."ROSE Blog: Rikki's Open Source Exchange

Mackenzie wrote an interesting observation about how geek women are perceived and how they present themselves. If you are a woman in open source, you've probably had similar experiences to what she and her friend Elfine have in this field. (As for Elfine's EeePC, I think I'd like one in pink, too, and also every other color.)

Here it is, Friday. How did that happen without a single ROSE Blog post? First, IT360 in Toronto, followed by a day catching up on our next magazine issue and then traveling to San Francisco for LugRadio Live. Two different sides of the continent, and two extremely different events. (And let me tell you, LinuxChix are everywhere! At least one stopped by the booth in Toronto.) Monday morning I wave good-bye to the family and hop on a plane for Canada. I'm leaving myself notes around my house to remember the passport (first, I need to find it). Canada just doesn't seem so far away that it should require one, but I digress... If you make it to Toronto for IT360 or San Francisco for LUGRadio Live next week, be sure to drop by the Linux Pro Magazine booth and pick up a sample copy or just say "HI!!!" We had such a great time in Toronto last year that we had to go back again, and LUGRadio looks like it's going to be a blast. (I heart San Francisco.) See you there.

While I'm on the subject of Emma Jane Hogbin, I should go ahead and mention the conference she organizes: HICK Tech. HICK Tech 2008 is April 30 at the Bayshore in Owen Sound. I've subscribed to Craft Magazine since the beginning and still have every issue. Today I ran across a familiar name, Emma Jane Hogbin, on the Craftzine.com blog, and now I have a face to go with it. The Craftzine.com blog shows Emma holding up a pair of hand-knit Drupal socks – can she get any cooler? Or geekier? Emma's talk at LUGRadio Live USA is at 4pm on April 12. (I don't normally drag my knitting along for these things, but I might make an exception this time and get some help with the neckline on my three-year-long sweater project.)
