The developers of Mono, the free implementation of the .NET framework, have achieved a major milestone with version 2.0.

The upcoming Ubuntu 8.10, alias Intrepid Ibex, is now in beta.

Gnome has a new update: Version 2.24 of the free desktop comes with improvements for the user, new communications systems and for the first time, will also serve as a basis for Gnome Mobile, a desktop variation for mobile devices.

Ekiga, formerly known as GnomeMeeting, is an open source VoIP application with video support. The Ekiga project has recently incorporated major enhancements into its version 3.0 software.

Photo viewer F-Spot is now available in the version 0.5.0. with ‘‘a countless amount of enhancements, polish and bugfixes.’’ Says Ruben Vermeersch in his blog.

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, wants a more elegant and user-friendly Linux-Desktop for it's users. In a full blown statement at this year’s OSCON, Ubuntu grounder Mark Shuttleworth proclaimed: ‘'The great task in front of us over the next two years is to lift the experience of the Linux desktop from something that is stable and robust and not so pretty, into something that is art'’.

The Ubuntu Linux distribution is offering online workshops from September 1 through 5 for those who would like to jump on board the initiative.
