Linux Mint 21.3 MATE
64-bit
Linux Mint is among the top Debian-based distributions and known for its user friendliness. This month's DVD includes the MATE edition, named for a desktop that continues the development of Gnome 2 under a different name. Codenamed "Virginia," Linux Mint 21.3 is a long-term support (LTS) release, which will receive upgrades until 2027.
Like the Cinnamon and Xfce editions, the MATE release features a major update to the Hypnotix TV app, including a Favorites link on the main screen, the ability to turn any streaming URL into its own channel, and the option to manually update the app rather than wait for a system update. Changes have also come to the Pix image viewer, which now rotates images automatically, while the Bulky renamer now supports drag-and-drop and thumbnails. Finally, the Warpinator file-sharing app can now connect manually, with either an IP code or QR code.
As part of the ongoing 21.x series, the 21.3 release includes numerous bug and security features. Users may also want to look at the list of known issues for the 21.2 release at https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_victoria_mate.php, which may still apply to this latest release. In particular, note that on some machines, Secure Boot may need to be turned off in the BIOS before installation.
