State of the Web

Event report: Velocity 2009

By Matthew Sacks

O'Reilly's Velocity Conference, held June 22-24 in San Jose, California, was one of the most relevant conferences on the state of the Web.

The conference included technical sessions and Keynote speakers from Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google, and included bleeding edge developments in the Web performance and operations space.

Google released a new Web performance tool called Page Speed, a Firebug enhancement similar to YSlow that includes modern dials for troubleshooting Web performance. Jonathan Heiliger from Facebook talked about the need for software engineering and operations to get along, and how that has helped make Facebook successful.

Overall, Velocity brings Web performance and operations to the forefront with some of the most relevant issues and solutions presented by leaders of the Web. Velocity was packed with sessions and keynote talks that were immediately applicable, and is the definitive location for raising the bar in Web performance and operations.
