ATI Graphics Driver Can Compiz

Aug 05, 2009

Four weeks ago, open source developers at AMD succeeded in running glxgears on R600/R700 GPUs for the first time. Now they've got Compiz also running on the Mesa driver.

As Phoronix reports, the feat takes AMD developers to another, greater milestone in the completion of free Radeon HD processors. With the current Mesa code and the DRM branch from Alex Deucher's repo, Compiz will run smoothly with Radeon HD 2000, HD 3000 and Radeon HD 4000 graphics cards, writes Deucher on his blog.

The performance is not perfect, but with improvements expected soon, new versions of Fedora, Mandriva, openSUSE and Ubuntu, scheduled this fall, could come with far better driver support for ATI cards.
