Creating Images with openSUSE Build Service 1.5

Mar 23, 2009

The newly released version 1.5 of the openSUSE Build Service (OBS) will enable developers to build not only software packages but entire distributions.

Besides exporting ISO images and FTP trees, OBS 1.5 can create installable images, such as the live CDs and DVDs.In addition, the new version can create images for installable USB sticks, Xen images and VMware images.

Like SUSE Studio, the new capabilities of the Build Service can be attributed to KIWI.

OpenSUSE 11.1 was the first release to be built entirely using the Build Service. Version 1.5 also comes with some experimental features including support for cross-architecture for ARM and package download on demand.

An abundance of articles dealing with the Build Service can be found on the openSUSE Wiki.
