Firefox Beta Survives Plugin Crashes

Apr 21, 2010

Firefox developers have relegated plugins to their own processes to prevent browser crashes. The version 3.6.4 beta encourages testing the new feature.

Until now, a crash in Flash, QuickTime or Silverlight would mean a browser crash. The plugins now separated from the browser process prevents this from happening. Crashed plugins will now actually restart after a page reload.

The feature called "out-of-process plugins" is now a part of the Firefox 3.6.4 beta and ready for public testing under Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. Developers strongly recommend deploying the beta on websites that have many elements processed by plugins, such as Flash Video Player. The beta comes in fully localized versions for download.
