Kernel Development: Linux-next Complete

The new "linux-next" Git tree, which aims to simplify and accelerate kernel development is more or less complete.

The new maintainer, Stephen Rothwell, announced on the Linux Kernel mailing list (lkml) that he has created the new "linux-next" tree. The source code branch is available for immediate use at http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/sfr/linux-next.git;a=summary. Developers will also find an overview of the individual sub-trees that have been added. There are 39 branches at present. Rothwell emphasizes that more trees are welcome, even if they are empty.

Rothwell’s local builds are available here. The Linux-next maintainer also writes that he was happy to receive notes from other maintainers on cross compilers and working configs. This would make it possible to add further kernel builds.

The recently announced Linux-next tree aims to provide an interim step between Torvald’s and Morton’s code bases and add more efficiency to work by both maintainers. The tree will also give subsystem maintainers tools to improve coordination of their work.
