OpenGL 4.1 Spec Finalized

New spec focuses on enhancing 3D graphics on mobile devices.

The Khronos Group announced that finalizing the OpenGL 4.1 specifications had been completed and that its release would be immediate. The new API specification is fully backwards compatible and adds several new features including 64-bit floating-point component shader inputs for higher geometric precision and the ability to query and load binary for a shader program objects.

But possibly the biggest addition to the royalty-free speculation is full compatibility with OpenGL ES 2.0, making it easier than ever to port graphics between desktop and mobile platforms.

“Khronos is methodically building their vision for pervasive developer access to cross-platform graphics, media and compute acceleration. The continued rapid-fire OpenGL evolution feeds high-end graphics innovation into that strategy,” stated Dr. Jon Peddie founder and principal of Jon Peddie Research.

The Khronos Group last updated the specification only four months ago. OpenGL 4.1 is available for download at opengl.org/registry.
