Vmware Buys Zimbra
Virtualization specialists VMware has enriched its portfolio with the open source based tool groupware Zimbra.
Since 2007, Zimbra had belonged to the Yahoo Corporation. Vmware will use the technology for its own cloud IT services. With mail and calendar options in scalable formats, Zimbra fits perfectly into their concept, says VM ware. The technology will remain available for Yahoo services.
There are still no details of the costs. Yahoo took over Zimbra end of 2007 for $350 million. Zimbra lists its own activity as consisting of 55 million pay-mailboxes by 150,000 organizations. Their current product is the Zimbra Collaboration Suite 6.0. Alongside the commercial version, an open source edition is also available.
Vmware wants to optimize the Zimbra product for the cloud infrastructure and its groupware solutions from Microsoft and IBM. Vmware has also announced a commitment towards further open source support. In his blog, Zimbra's President, Jim Morrisroe, makes it clear he will continue to follow the goal of making Zimbra the best open source software for email and collaboration on the market.
