This month’s Linux Magazine DVD brings you the latest release of the Community Enterprise Operating System (CentOS) [1]-[5]. CentOS is an enterprise-class Linux distribution that provides a free alternative to high-cost enterprise systems from SUSE or Red Hat. CentOS consistently competes with Debian for the top spot as the most popular Linux distribution for web servers [6].
CentOS is a community re-build of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). CentOS developers use Red Hat’s source code to create a product very similar to RHEL, with the Red Hat branding and logos removed.
CentOS version 6.2 is based on RHEL 6.2. The CentOS maintainers strive to maintain 100% binary compatibility with the Red Hat source product. CentOS 6.2 includes all updates since the RHEL 6.2 release and combines all Red Hat variants into one repository.
Support for CentOS 6.2 is planned until November 30, 2017.
