Debian meets Mate with the versatile DMDc Live Linux
Own Archives
Unlike many other newcomer distros, and thanks to its close relationship with the heavyweight Debian, DMDc comes with a huge inventory of software in its repositories. In addition to the various Debian collections, DMDc developers also offer their own archives.
Although the archives are already enabled in the Synaptic graphical package manager, you do still need to download the appropriate package information manually to see the entire inventory. To download the package information, click Reload Package Information in the Synaptic Edit menu. The software updates the data, giving you a choice of no fewer than 37,000 packages.
Conclusions
The newcomer distro DMDc is stable, runs smoothly, and thanks to Debian at its base, offers a superb choice of applications and tools. The desktop allows a seamless transition from Gnome 2, and DMDc with Mate can easily hold its own against the current Xfce- or LXDE-based distros.
In addition to the Debian software inventory, the developers also maintain their own repositories, and they have built a number of relatively unknown applications into the system that see DMDc is well prepared for any common usage scenario. Overall, DMDC Linux is quite ready for the world and has the potential to attract a larger user community.
