Mageia is a community-based descendant of Mandrake and Mandriva Linux. Both were pioneers of user-friendliness in their day and used their own package management system and utilities. Mageia continues this tradition, with a community based largely in Europe.
Mageia 9 offers a smaller minimal install and numerous new features. Its install base includes improved partitioning and rescue, as well as enhanced NFS support. On the desktop, Mageia 9 features revised documentation, and a more systematic Mageia Welcome, while the Mageia Control Center now switches easily between PulseAudio and PipeWire, a useful ability in this time of audio transition. Other changes include a reworked interface for the image burner IsoDumper, new tools for creating containers, and a shift from aufs to overlay2 storage for containers, with a script to ensure a successful – if slow – migration.
Mageia is well-suited for beginners, but more experienced users might need a brief adjustment period to become accustomed to all the new app names. Before installing, Mageia suggests that all users read the release notes (https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_9_Release_Notes#Release_highlights) for errata and possible problems, although many are concerned with upgrades from earlier releases.
