Broadcom Releases Open Source Wireless Drivers
Drivers were built using the kernel's SoftMAC framework.
Wireless communications leader Broadcom has released a series of open source wireless drivers for Linux with the intent to contribute the finalized versions upstream and into the Linux kernel.
This is good news for anyone who has struggled with WiFi connectivity on a Linux distro. Once the drivers are merged into the Linux kernel, developers will be able to better support Broadcom wireless chips. In its current form, the driver supports BCM4313, BCM43224, and BCM43225. The driver is available at git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/staging-next-2.6.git in the drivers/staging/brcm80211 directory.
Canonical has plans to incorporate the driver into Ubuntu 10.10 and may port the driver back into 10.4.
