Codecs and Virtualization in Linspire’s Software Warehouse
Users can now buy Parallels virtualization software and a package with multimedia codecs by Fluendo from Linspire’s Click'n'Run Warehouse (CNR).
These new additions are the practical consequence of the latest corporation entered into by the Linux distributor. The vendor’s own distributions, Freespire 2.0 and Linspire 6.0 already have a client for the software warehouse, as do Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 thanks to cooperation with Canonical. Linspire advertises CNR as a sales channel for commercial Linux software; it also has a traditional Webshop.
Parallels Workstation 2.2, the virtualization software is now available for around US$ 50. It allows users to run Windows (from 3.1 to Vista), Mac OS X, NetBSD, OpenBSD and Linux as guest operating systems on a Linux machine. Among other things it supports Intel’s VT virtualization technology.
The Fluendo Megabundle is a collection of proprietary codecs that allow Linux users to enhance the GStreamer Version 0.10.3 or later multimedia framework. CNR has the package with licensed codes Microsoft’s WMA, WMV, ASF and MMS, along with decoders for MPEG4, MP3 and AC3 Divx support for about US$ 40.
