Fast Forward: VLC 1.0.0 Media Player RC1
May 13 VideoLAN announced and made ready for download the release candidate of its VLC Media Player 1.0. The new version supports more codecs and provides numerous enhancements.
The first stable version of the VLC Media Player 1.0 is code-named Goldeneye. The release of the first release candidate shows that the final product is sprinting to its goal. The 1.0.0 candidate brings new codecs and countless changes to its core components.
Enhancements include frame-by-frame playback, instantaneous pausing and finer speed control. There is an an option for on-the-fly recording for all media, TV programs can be recorded and viewed time-shifted and subtitles were improved. Thanks to new codecs, VLC supports Dolby Digital Plus, True HD/MLP and EAS3, and the software recognizes Blu-Ray and AVCHD demuxers, among other things. Not least of all VLC provides better DVB support so that the Linux client can scan across multiple channels. Surround sound support is available for PulseAudio.
VideoLAN, makers of the VLC, also announce the Skins2 Contest on their wiki page for community involvement in skin development for the new VLC by using the Skin Editor. Deadline is May 29, 2009. VLC Media Player release candidate source code download is available here.
