FreeBSD Version 7.1 Available for Download
The FreeBSD Project has released version 7.1 of the BSD Unix-based operating system. The release comes without any spectacular changes.
Basically an exercise in version-continuity, FreeBSD 7.1 comes with a new kernel that improves hardware support, including Intel graphic cards with i915 chip sets and Atheros network cards. Thanks to the revamped boot loader, the FreeBSD kernel can now be started from USB devices and support for GPT-labeled devices, from which current Mac systems will benefit, is also new.
KDE version 3.5.10 is included, along with version 2.22.3 of Gnome. Other major changes concern the kernel alone. Details can be found in the release notes. FreeBSD 7.1 as ISO image is available for download on the project website. Downloads for i386 and amd64 architectures are available for the first time on DVD. As an alternative, the website also offers a BitTorrent file.
