Linux Clients for Brazil's Schools
Brazil's municipal schools should be getting more than 350,000 power-saving thin clients for their students.
Canadian company Userful and Brazilian firm ThinNetworks have won a contract with the Brazilian government to supply 356,800 thin clients to schools in 5,560 municipalities. Userful will enable this access through its Multiplier virtualization hardware and software solution, turning a single computer into up to 10 independent student workstations.
A Userful press release explains the details. A first phase deployment of 19,000 desktops has already showed success. The full deployment over the next years is to be the world's largest.
The Userful Desktop and Multiplier products are based on Fedora, although the commercial software is not under any free license. A fully functioning demo version for two workstations is available for Live CD download.
