Mozilla Project Lays Groundwork for Open Source Web App Store

May 21, 2010

Project outlines features, sets starting point.

The Mozilla Project today announced on the Mozilla blog the creation of an open Web app store dedicated to supporting the development of cross-platform web apps.

According to Mozilla, an open app store should be built on open standards such as HTML5, CSS, Javascript to encourage interoperability. An open app store should also contain transparent quality assurance and security guidelines that are clearly defined and easy to understand. Mozilla also emphasized the importance of privacy in an open app store by tracking user behavior only to extent that is necessary to distribution and fulfillment.

The Mozilla Project didn't announce a timetable or any additional details for the open Web app store. Instead the project opened the discussion up to the community.
