Opera 10.10 with Unite Enables File Sharing
The Opera Unite feature promised in Opera 10 would make it easier for users to collaborate on files, but needed to undergo some thorough testing. The Norwegian browser vendor now delivers it in Opera 10.10.
Opera version 10.0 is now available for download, as usual also for Linux (x86, x86-64 and PPC) in ready packages for Linux distros. The changelog lists numerous enhancements and fixes, with the highlight (and only really new feature) being Opera Unite. Unite should provide users a DynDNS-like system and an integrated webserver to become active on the Web without needing a dedicated server.
Opera Unite enables users to have installed apps to provide others with the opportunity to view photo galleries, webpages and shared file, for everyone or password-protected for friends. A virtual Fridge application provides a way to leave notes, and streaming software and the media player are installable by way of Opera as the media server. Multiple users can work simultaneously on a graphic in the Whiteboard, a Document Sync program enables backups, and a chat program or Twitter client helps in communicating with others. Noteworthy is that Opera should work with other browsers, that it is, in effect, "just another" webserver. A catalog of most popular Opera Unite applications is on the Opera webpage. Opera is happy to get Unite developers writing other apps and even announced a competition recently for new submissions. Importantly, Opera Unite ends its services when exiting the browser, so it's not a true server alternative.
