Slax 7 Release Candidate 1 Announced

Slax 7 features KDE4 with an assortment of pre-installed software and recovery tools.

The latest Slax 7 build has been announced as release candidate 1. According to the developer’s announcement, this version features KDE4 “with many applications from kde network, kde multimedia, kde games, pidgin IM, FireFox, MPlayer and more.” The final Slax 7 is expected to be released by the end of 2012.

The project website describes Slax as a modern, portable, small, and fast Linux operating system with a modular design. The Slax distribution (“your pocket operating system”) includes an assortment of pre-installed software along with a graphical user interface and recovery tools for system administrators.

The system weighs in at 183MB for the 32-bit version and 188MB for the 64-bit variant and will reportedly run on boxes with 256MB or more of RAM. You can download Slax from the project website or you can purchase Slax 7 preloaded on a Kingston DataTraveler SE9 USB Flash Drive for US$ 25.
